School of Dentistry periodontist earns perfect score on oral exam; Invited to guest lecture in Chennai, India

Dr. Arif Salman is a periodontist at the WVU School of DentistryArif Salman Abdul Shakore, BDS, MDS, MDSc, recently earned a perfect score during the oral exam administered by the American Board of Periodontology (ABP). Dr. Salman is a board-certified periodontist and assistant professor in the Department of Periodontics.

The process to earn board certification involves intense written and oral exams covering diagnosis, treatment and prevention of periodontal or gum disease as well as reconstruction and regeneration treatment for patients with gum disease.

As a result of earning the highest score on the exam, the ABP presented Salman with the Leslie M. Salkin Achievement Award in honor of the ABP former director who contributed to the development of the ABP oral examinations.

On March 8, 2019, Salman will speak at Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital at Bharath University in Chennai, India, as part of an all-day continuing education session at the school’s annual “Perio Deliberations.” He will present “A Microsurgical Approach to Soft Tissue Augmentation around Teeth and Implants.” While there, he will also discuss implant-loading protocols in implant dentistry with the International Team for Implantology (ITI) Chennai Study Club.

Salman received his Master of Dental Surgery degree from The Tamil Dr. M.G.R Medical University in Chennai, India in 2007. Following his postgraduate dental education, Salman moved to the United States to participate in an implant fellowship program supported by a scholarship from International Team for Implantology. In 2017, Salman successfully completed a periodontics residency at the University of Connecticut.
