WVU dental student authors children’s book, portion of proceeds to benefit DDS Class of 2028

Zachary Friend, a second-year Doctor of Dental Surgery student in the West Virginia University School of Dentistry, is the author of a new children’s book, “Emily’s Magical Christmas Adventure.”

The book, published by Page Publishing, follows Emily’s snowy day adventure as she discovers the joy of Christmas, enjoys winter activities and meets many furry friends along the way.

To purchase and ensure delivery before Christmas Day, online ordering is open until Nov. 12, 2025.

"I hope to spark a realization in readers that the Christmas season does not need to be focused on the number of gifts under the tree," Friend said. "The book takes readers on a snow covered magical escape to enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds us during the Christmas season."

As part of a fundraiser, a portion of the proceeds from advanced copies sold will benefit the School of Dentistry Class of 2028 Doctor of Dental Surgery program.

"The book will not be available in major bookstores until the Spring of 2026,” Friend said. “The DDS program typically conducts a number of fundraising activities throughout the year to benefit student events. Since the book will not be available for purchase in major bookstores for a few months, as the author of the book, I was able to make this book available this Christmas season through a fundraiser for my class."
