Dr. Susan K. Morgan holds three degrees from West Virginia University: a Bachelor of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene in 1977, a Master of Science Degree in Community Health Education in 1982, and a Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree in 1988. She has utilized all three throughout her professional career.
Susan practiced clinical dental hygiene for one year in Uniontown, PA, and for two years she was an instructor of dental hygiene at West Virginia Institute of Technology in Montgomery, WV. Then, she was a part-time instructor of dental assisting at the West Virginia Career College in Morgantown, WV. Following this, she was a part-time Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Dental Hygiene at WVU where she taught both clinically and didactically and served as the Acting Coordinator of the Dental School Cleft Palate Clinic.
In 1988, Dr. Morgan began her versatile career in dentistry. She worked until 1997 as a Public Health Dentist for the Marion County Health Department. Also in 1988, she began her career as a part-time dental faculty member in the WVU School of Dentistry until her retirement in December 2021. During those years, she also worked in private practice for 14 years.
Dr. Morgan’s tenure at the WVU School of Dentistry included working in the Departments of Endodontics and Periodontics and serving as a Student Advisor and Team Leader. She developed the WVU School of Dentistry Tobacco Cessation Program and served as Vice-Chairman of the Governor’s Task Force on Tobacco Cessation on which she continues to serve. Susan developed and submitted the accreditation document that resulted in WV School of Dentistry being a nationally and internationally Accredited Tobacco Treatment Training Program.
Susan is certified as a Tobacco Treatment Training Specialist and has presented numerous continuing education programs on tobacco cessation and training dental, pharmacy, and physician students to become Certified Tobacco Treatment Training Specialists.
Dr. Morgan is a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry and has a Masters in the same. She is also certified in the use of lasers through the Academy of Laser Dentistry.
In December 2021, Dr. Morgan retired as Clinical Professor Emerita from the West Virginia University School of Dentistry. Several years ago, she served as President of the WVU School of Dentistry Alumni Association. With such an illustrious career in the dental profession, it is truly fitting that she receives the WVU Dental Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Award.
