Experienced hygienist joins WVU School of Dentistry faculty

Following two decades of serving patients in dental clinics, the West Virginia University School of Dentistry welcomed Alyson Sarsfield as a full-time faculty member during the Spring 2026 semester.

Sarsfield, who previously served the School as coordinator of the predoctoral clinic from 2020 to 2023, has been appointed as a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Dental Hygiene.

“I am incredibly excited to join the WVU dental hygiene faculty,” Sarsfield said. “Contributing to the education and preparation of future dental hygienists has been a goal of mine for several years. I am grateful to make my goal a reality and for this opportunity to be part of a program that is committed to advancing the profession of dental hygiene. I look forward to bringing my private practice experience into the student clinic to support and inspire student learning and growth.”

As a faculty member, Sarsfield will provide clinical and laboratory instruction to students enrolled in the four-year, integrated Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene program, preparing them to meet the oral health needs of their patients and communities.

“The Department is lucky to have Ms. Sarsfield, as she brings a wealth of experience from private practice and exudes enthusiasm for all aspects of the dental hygiene profession,” Amy Funk, MS, chair and professor, said. “Our students are equally as excited, and they have expressed their gratitude for her guidance in clinical and laboratory courses.”

In addition to her predoctoral clinic coordinator role, Sarsfield served the School as a dental hygienist in the Prosthodontic Clinic and Dental Group Practice at WVU Dental, the clinical practice component of the WVU School of Dentistry offering care from faculty, resident, and student dentists, from 2023 until her faculty appointment.

Prior to joining WVU, Sarsfield was employed at private practices in Fairmont and Morgantown for nearly 25 years. Her work serving patients includes extensive experience in oral health promotion and advocacy in general dentistry and prevention care environments.

Sarsfield earned her dental hygiene degree from West Liberty State College, and she is currently pursuing a Master of Education in Professional Studies at Fairmont State University.
