Graduate prosthodontics - Meet the Director

Dr. Shelby Alexander leads the postdoctoral prosthodontics program.

My name is Shelby Alexander and I am a 2013 graduate of West Virginia University School of Dentistry. I completed the dental school’s graduate program in prosthodontics in 2016.

On January 1, 2021 I was named the official director of our prosthodontics graduate program. I am truly blessed to hold this position because I have a passion and desire to maintain the same level of excellence all those before me have established.

Prior to dental school I worked as a dental assistant to Dr. Marcos Cid. I was admitted to the dentistry program by Dr. Mark Richards. Both Drs. Geoff Cunningham and Mohssen Ghalichebaf were among my predoctoral instructors.  During residency I had the pleasure of being mentored by Drs. Matthew Bryington, Bryan Dye, David Felton, Soo Cheol Jeong, Mark Richards and Mohssen Ghalichebaf.

As alumna myself and speaking from experience, to be most effective as an educational institution, alumni support is integral and appreciated.  I sincerely thank each of you for choosing WVU School of Dentistry for your education and for your continued interest in the advancement of dentistry and specifically prosthodontics.

I value your experiences and expertise to help teach our residents and to create a strong network of the best prosthodontists in the world. Afterall, according to Dr. Wanker, our alma mater is the #1 dental school in the world! So, it stands to reason our prosthodontics program is the best as well!

You are our legacy and important to our future. Philanthropic support is an integral part of  excellence in education. I welcome you to consider giving back to the residency program either with your time and talent or financially if you are in the position to do so.

I would love to coordinate seminars with you and our residents. Your vast knowledge and experiences enhance their education.  We look forward to coordinating a time to host you in person or virtually.

To express interest in investing in our program, please call me at 304-293-7101 or email shelby.alexander@hsc.wvu.edu or call Lyndsey Gray at 304-293-7277 or email her at lgray1@hsc.wvu.edu.

You can be certain your contributions go directly toward the advancement of our prosthodontics program through a dedicated fund for graduate prosthodontics.  (2W1799 – Graduate Prosthodontics Fund)  The fund exclusively supports the needs of our residents and ultimately our patients.

Our goals for the fund include supporting residents travel expenses for conference and learning opportunities; 3Shape integration into the curriculum for digital, wax up, implant and framework design (implant studio and complete restorative); and acquiring a 3D printer.

Gifts can be made online at https://give.wvu.edu/give/415566/#!/donation/checkout. Questions regarding financial contributions may be directed to Karen Coombs, Director of Development, at 304-216-3784 or via email kcoombs@wvuf.org .

I have been very fortunate to meet and develop a relationship with many of you and only hope to continue to do so with others. From the Alexander family – me, my husband Ryan and our three crazy children under 5! – and from our graduate prosthodontics family, I send you and your loved ones the warmest of wishes.

Be safe!

Blessings,
Shelby A. Alexander DDS MS FACP
