SOLE Spotlight: Make Readings More Accessible

As WVU continues preparing digital course materials to meet ADA Title II accessibility expectations and WVU’s Digital Accessibility Policy, faculty can support efforts by reviewing how required readings are shared in SOLE.

Review the Make PDFs for Library Readings More Accessible in SOLE article in the IT Help Center for detailed guidance on choosing web-based readings, writing meaningful link text, adding PDF accessibility notes and more.

In particular, faculty should use the web-based version of journal articles, book chapters and other library resources whenever available, rather than relying on a PDF as the only or primary option. PDFs are convenient, but not always accessible. Scanned, older or poorly structured PDFs may lack essential accessibility features like tags, document titles, logical reading order or alt text for meaningful images.

Faculty can use WVU Libraries’ Ask a Librarian feature for help locating resources, creating access-friendly links to library resources, or identifying whether a web-based version is available.
