Students at West Virginia University kicked off their team-based approach to learning with a tailgate at the WVU Athletics Caperton Indoor Facility on Monday, Sept. 30.
Hosted by the WVU Health Sciences Office of Interprofessional Education, students from across campus enrolled in academic programs in health fields gathered for the event that included networking opportunities, team activities and traditional tailgate snacks. The event was the first in a series of Monday Sessions designed to introduce students to four interprofessional education competencies – professional roles and responsibilities, values and ethics, teams and teamwork, and communication.
During the large group didactic session, students heard from Dr. Louise Veselicky, associate vice president for academic affairs, and Gina Baugh, director of interprofessional education and clinical professor in the School of Pharmacy. They were then able to form smaller groups with peers studying a variety of disciplines to provide each other with their unique perspective as members of a healthcare team.
In addition to Monday Sessions, the WVU Health Sciences Office of Interprofessional Education students can register online for a variety of other collaborative hands-on learning experiences that teach them how to best serve their patients and communities.
