Local Anesthesia in Dental Practice is a basic didactic course designed to prepare first year dental students and third year dental hygiene students with the background anatomic, neurophysiologic, and pharmacologic concepts in the application of local anesthesia. The course is based on the textbook, Handbook of Local Anesthesia, fourth edition, by Malamed. Clinical application is taught during the following summer clinical competencies course.

It is based on the textbook, Contemporary Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, by Peterson, etal, third edition.

Medical emergencies in The Dental Office is an overview course for second and third year dental students. The course is based on the textbook of the same name, by Stanley Malamed. It is currently in the fourth edition.

Advanced Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is presented in the third year and is intended to expand the student’s knowledge base and prepare them for management of more complex cases as well as recognition of cases which should be referred for specialty care. The course is based on Peterson’s textbook, Contemporary Oral and Maxillofacail Surgery, fourth edition.

Pain and Anxiety Control in Dentistry is an advanced course for third year students which introduces a full spectrum of management techniques for more difficult patients. Educational and licensing requirements are described and referral methods are described. The course is based on Ray Dionne’s textbook, Management of Pain and Anxiety in the Dental Office.

Principles of Medicine is presented in the third year to enhance the students appreciation of the effects of various disease states on the oral health, and the problems encountered in managing the dental care of medically compromised patients. The course is based on Little’s textbook Dental Management of the Medically Compromised Patient.

Clinical Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery involves rotations in the clinic for shadowing, and performance of basic out patient procedures for second year students and more complex cases for fourth year students.

Clinical Tract in OMS is an elective advanced experience chosen by selected fourth year students interested in more experience or in pursuing specialty training.
