Curriculum
Our two-year certificate program consists of well-balanced didactic instruction and clinical experiences with dental and medical multidisciplinary faculty designed to prepare residents for successful board certification exams. Active resident participation is expected in all courses.
Didactic and biomedical science training typically take place in the WVU Health Sciences Center. Clinical experiences are completed at WVU Dental, the clinical practice component of the WVU School of Dentistry located at the Health Sciences Center and Suncrest Towne Centre, and WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital. The WVU Dental Pediatric Clinic is currently undergoing an extensive expansion and renovation project that is focused on modernizing and integrating the clinic back into the Health Sciences Center from its current location at Suncrest Towne Centre. This work is expected to be completed prior to the start of the Fall 2026 semester. WVU Medicine Children’s, opened in 2022, is a state-of-the-art hospital on the WVU Health Sciences Campus where residents conduct off-service rotations and collaborate with various pediatric sub-specialty services in comprehensive patient care.
In addition to didactic instruction and clinical experiences, residents teach pre-doctoral students enrolled in the WVU School of Dentistry. All graduating residents also are required to conduct an original research project and present the research at a professional meeting.
Upon completion of the program, residents will be awarded a certificate of specialty training in pediatric dentistry and will meet the advanced eligibility requirements of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
